Julia read Zoology at the University of Sheffield and, after a short spell in the pharmaceutical industry, moved to London to study for a PhD in Pharmacology. She was appointed to the Chair of Pharmacology at Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School in 1987 and became Pre-clinical Dean in 1992. She joined Imperial College London in 1997, contributing to the establishment of the new Faculty of Medicine. At Imperial she held a number of roles, including Head of the Centre for Integrative Mammalian Physiology and Pharmacology and Pro-Rector (Education and Academic Affairs). In 2012 Julia was appointed Vice-Chancellor and President of Brunel University London. Her research has focused on corticosteroids and the complex interplay between the neuroendocrine and host defence system. She received BPS’s Gaddum Prize in 1994 and the AstraZeneca Women in Pharmacology Prize in 2009, serving on several committees and as President in 2004–05. She is currently Treasurer of Universities UK; Chairman of the Research Concordat Strategy Group; a Director of the National Centre for Universities and Business and of Imperial College Health Partners; and a Trustee of STEMNET.
